Obstacles to Love: Georg Polti Plots or Storylines - The 36 Dramatic or Tragic Situations

Abstract

Here is a common theme but can seem irritating when all the parties have to do, if they love so strongly, is to elope and start from scratch. In fact usually some device makes them equals and the play can end happily. If you have been intending to start that novel or screenplay but felt short of ideas, here is the Wise Women’s synopsis of plot to give you a few ideas. May the Goddess inspire you. Saviour Shirlie.

Obstacles to Love

Here is a common theme but can seem irritating when all the parties have to do, if they love so strongly, is to elope and start from scratch. In fact usually some device makes them equals and the play can end happily. More serious obstacles than money are age, character, tastes, etc, and they are more common.

A general theory applies to age: the first love (20 years) seeks equality of rank and superiority of age; the second (30 years), boldness having been acquired, seeks superiors in rank but equals in age; the third inclines to younger and socially inferior people.

Of course, whatever the subject of a drama, today a love aspect will be introduced.

Elements

  1. Two lovers
  2. An obstacle

Themes

  1. Marriage hindered or prevented

    • Here is the sentimental situation of many 18th century works: a Lord falls for a peasant girl. In Georges Sand a woman falls for a man of lower rank…
      • by inequality of rank
      • by inequality of fortune
      • by enemies and contingent obstacles
      • because the woman was previously betrothed to another
      • the same complicated by an imaginary mariage
  2. Successful marriage impeded or disturbed
    • by the opposition of relatives
    • by the parents-in-law
  3. A union spoiled by the incompatibility of temper of the lovers

Before you go, think about this…

After being shown round a new school the local politico said, “And what do you reckon to teach them here, Mr Principal?” The Principal replied, “To fear God, and to wash the back of the neck”. The politico looked surprised. “Why ‘to wash the back of the neck’?” he asked. “Because”, the Principal answered, “once they can do that successfully, you know they can cope with the unseen.”
