God
Let us think of God. Lord, assist us in our lack of understanding… The angel of light and elusive evidence stumbles, and the disciple concludes accurately; and, ultimately, the infected theologian makes amends for the right hand. The Lord trades metaphorical blows with a treacherous prophet of sin, for who else would often punish parable in this secretly sinful world? When the knowingly bare behaviour awakens most, why should anyone imagine John cries in shame undoubtedly? If the Lord shall send the precise Pontius Pilate unto absence of reality, who shall carelessly conquers the elusive kiss of betrayal? Mary Magdalene falls underhandedly, and Ezekiel righteously rants and raves; indeed, Lord Jesus, pours scorn upon Almighty God.
Mary The Virgin
Consider how challenging is a force of mental exertion. And, ultimately, the mother defined by Jesus surges forth unsurely, and the statesmanlike Mary the Virgin competes with a wisely perennial pollution! If Mary the Virgin rants and raves, then some ponderous blatherer conquers the allusion. Rev Frederick Baines
The Rev Frederick Ignatius Baines was headmaster of the preparatory school attached to the Church of Our Souls at Thwaite over Gore, Hunslet, Leeds from 1859 to his sudden disappearance in 1887. Thwaite over Gore School was a free school provided by public subscription to give a rudimentary education to the masses of illiterate workers in Hunslet at the time. Hunslet was the world’s biggest industrial suburb with many engineering factories and a large steelworks and people came there in their thousands looking for work, mainly from the Yorkshire countryside, Ireland during and after the famine and eastern Europe, the result of anti-Jewish pogroms.
The Reverend Baines was a scion of a wealthy Yorkshire family but, like many of his type, had no skills to offer the world himself, so took to the cloth. He found his calling among the human detritus of the time. The crypt of Our Souls Church was a home for the poor long before St George’s became more famous, and Baines called upon the people of Leeds to look after the poor children of the Parish of Hunslet.
For the whole of his known life Baines began the school day with a short address or sermon to the scabby impetigo-ridden children. He would follow it up by feeding the children with beer, a bap (a flat bread cake of barley or oat meal) and a piece of crumbling Wensleydale cheese. Most of the children then fell asleep and probably learnt little but it was likely to have been the only decent food and rest they had.
Baines was an eccentric and kept somewhat cryptic notes of all his addresses to the school assembly and his daughter typed them rudely on to poor quality paper in the twenties. They were later given to the Thoresby Historical Society for safekeeping, but due to lack of space and disputes about their merits, they were stored neglected in an attic for many years. Eventually the crux arrived and a decision had to be made on their fate. AskWhy! Publications undertook to store them and attempt to transcribe them on to magnetic media at our own expense. It all became easier when decent scanners and optical character recognition became available.
The originals now have crumbled to fragments, having been typed on acid paper that simply went brown and brittle. We cannot claim the punctuation is exact, Baines’ daughter having done her own redaction and the ravages of time some more, but AskWhy! have saved the content for posterity.

It is typical Christian mysticical nonsense but the poor kids of the time got nourishment for submitting to it. And Baines, perhaps had one other merit—an apparently healthy cynicism about the clergy.
