Directory Summary
In these
Frome pages, AskWhy! gives a few facts about the history and people of Frome and its Wessex environs. It is in the heart of the old Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and therefore at the center of a plethora of interesting historical houses and places. Frome is a long neglected town, but the neglect has preserved much of it, and it is slowly reviving as its more glamoorous neighbours get too expensive or overcrowded. It is not a tourist attraction itself but is just the place for a holiday center for seeing old England from Stonehenge to the Tank Museum, with a few tankards of cider thrown in of an evening! Cheers!
The Wisdom of Carl
There’s a widely held perception that science is ’too hard’ for ordinary people. We can see this reflected in the statistic that only around 10 per cent of American high school students ever opt for a course in physics. What makes science too hard for Americans? What happened to the American genius for science, technical innovation and hard work? Americans once took enormous pride in their inventors, who pioneered the telegraph, telephone, electric light, phonograph, automobile and airplane. Except for computers, all that seems a thing of the past. Where did all that Yankee ingenuity go?

Before you go, think about this…
An English capitalist will cheerfully invest his money in Timbuctoo or China, or Russia, or anywhere that he thinks he can secure a profit, even though it may be in the territory of his mortal enemy. He does not invest his money in order to give employment to his workers, but to make a profit.
