Frome, Heart of Wessex

Directory Summary
In these Frome pages, AskWhy! gives a few facts about the history and people of Frome and its Wessex environs. It is in the heart of the old Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and therefore at the center of a plethora of interesting historical houses and places. Frome is a long neglected town, but the neglect has preserved much of it, and it is slowly reviving as its more glamoorous neighbours get too expensive or overcrowded. It is not a tourist attraction itself but is just the place for a holiday center for seeing old England from Stonehenge to the Tank Museum, with a few tankards of cider thrown in of an evening! Cheers!

Robert Anton Wilson (The New Inquisition: Irrational Rationalism and the Citadel of Science, 1986) describes skeptics as the New Inquisition, but Sagan points out that no sceptic compels belief, and the reverse is actually true, that it is the skeptics who are deprived of an adequate voice. The media treatment of the skeptical approach is dismal, and the media hacks, hosts and presenters are all convinced that religion is far more important than science, mainly because they are scientific illiterates themselves, and proud of it! New agers are not being called up before inquisitorial tribunals, nor whipped for contradicting orthodoxy, as critics of received religions were, and they are not being burned at the stake. Their beef is the same as that of the Christian Churches, they cannot stand having their fancies criticized. They are offering stale religion because they have not the bottle or discipline to oppose the politicians and corporate executives who make the decisions about our world. When they are not right wing tricksters, they are moral cowards.

Christians were fooled by the abbots and bishops showing off impossible relics in just the same way that gullible pagans had been. The pagans of classical times had looked in amazement on the clay Prometheus had used to make human beings. They were shown the egg Leto had laid after she had been seduced by Zeus. And here was the hair that Isis had torn out in despair when she heard that Osiris was dead. And here it was somewhere else. Oh!, and there too! That the hair of Isis could be found at several of her temples was at least more likely than that the foreskin of the baby Jesus could be simultaneously displayed in several Catholic churches.
