Science or Belief?
Directory Summary
Is patriarchal religion the voice of truth, or fiction? Here AskWhy! contrasts scientific beliefs and religious beliefs. Religious believers find merit in faith, believing things for which there is no sound evidence. Science is founded on evidence and it is a method of testing it to make sure it is sound. The tests prove science to be nothing but the truth within given limits, but an inconvenient truth for religions is that supposedly boundless faith can never be proved, and any such proof would eliminate the need for it. Believers take their belief on the authority of parents and priests, and they in turn did the same. Every religious belief is merely a custom of a particular society. Different societies have different religious traditions, yet each is the only true one that the faithful will kill for, though there is no proof of it. Yet believers deny and decry proved science. Truth pages are on this theme.

The fundamental premise of channelling, spiritualism, and other forms of necromancy is that when we die we don’t. Some thinking, feeling, and remembering part of us continues. That whatever-it-is—a soul or spirit, neither matter nor energy, but something else—can, we are told, re-enter the bodies of human and other beings in the future, and so death loses much of its sting. What’s more, we have an opportunity, if the spiritualist or channelling contentions are true, to make contact with loved ones who have died.
How is it that channellers never give us verifiable information otherwise unavailable? Why does Alexander the Great never tell us about the location of his tomb, Fermat about his Last Theorem, James Wilkes Booth about the Lincoln assassination conspiracy, Hermann Goering about the Reichstag fire? Why don’t Sophocles, Democritus and Aristarchus dictate their lost books?

Discussing human sexuality in a TV forum, the compere explained a case where a father, son and grandson, all had the same mistress. The panel Christian, seeing a chance for some quotations from the bible began, “There’s nothing new under the sun…”, whereupon the atheist on the panel interjected, “…or under the grandson”.
