Directory Summary
Is patriarchal religion the voice of truth, or fiction? Here AskWhy! contrasts
scientific beliefs and
religious beliefs. Religious believers find merit in
faith, believing things for which there is
no sound evidence. Science is
founded on evidence and it is a
method of testing it to make sure it is
sound. The tests prove science to be
nothing but the truth within given limits, but an inconvenient truth for religions is that supposedly boundless faith can
never be proved, and any such proof would eliminate the need for it. Believers take their belief on the authority of parents and priests, and they in turn did the same. Every religious belief is
merely a custom of a particular society. Different societies have different religious traditions, yet each is the
only true one that the faithful will kill for, though there is
no proof of it. Yet believers
deny and decry proved science.

The Wisdom of Carl
If we are absolutely sure that our beliefs are right, and those of others wrong, that we are motivated by good, and others by evil, that the King of the Universe speaks to us, and not to adherents of very different faiths, that it is wicked to challenge conventional doctrines or to ask searching questions, that our main job is to believe and obey, then the witch mania will recur in its infinite variations down to the time of the last man.
Carl Sagan, The Demon Haunted World (1996)

Give or take a few, it’s been 23755 months since the first coming of Christ ended. The Rapture can’t be long now… Can it?
Before you go, think about this…
A credulous mind… finds most delight in believing strange things, and the stranger they are, the easier they pass with him. But he never regards those that are plain and feasible, for every man can believe such.
Samuel Butler, Characters (1669)
