Fred Hoyle and C Wickramasinghe: Archeopteryx, a Case of Fossil Forgery?

Abstract

Paleontologist, Beverly Halstead, wrote a book review in the New Scientist shortly before his death. The authors of the book were Fred Hoyle, a scientific knight and a Fellow of the Royal Society, and C Wickramasinghe, a mathematician. Both evidently thought they had the authority to declare Archeopteryx, considered a missing link between birds and reptiles, as an unequivocal fraud. The book was couched in intemperate language and contained demonstrable falsehoods and calumnies of people unable to defend themselves. Creationist literature on Archaeopteryx refused to accept it as a transition fossil by using semantic tricks. Thus, the fossil is feathered, so it was a bird, and as a bird, it could not be an intermediate between birds and reptiles. Ergo, it was not a transition fossil. Creationists will, of course, cite this “authoritative” work as evidence that Archeopteryx is faked. Who Lies Sleeping? The Dinosaur Heritage and the Extinction of Man by Dr Michael D Magee

But as to the fable that there are Antipodes, that is to say, men on the opposite side of the earth, where the sun rises when it sets to us, men who walk with their feet opposite ours, that is on no ground credible. And, indeed, it is not affirmed that this has been learned by historical knowledge.

Before you go, think about this…

An evangelist was seated at dinner next to Mrs Patrick Campbell and, determined to impress her with the power of the Creator engaged her on the subject of ants. Detail poured from him as he sought in his enthusiasm to impress her. “And do you know, they even have their own army and their own police force!” “Indeed”, replied Mrs Campbell, “but no navy, and no clergy?”

The Wisdom of Carl
When a bishop from the American West prays for God to intervene and end a devastating dry spell, why is the prayer needed? Didn’t God know of the drought? Was he unaware that it threatened the bishop’s parishioners? What is implied here about the limitations of a supposedly omnipotent and omniscient deity? The bishop asked his followers to pray as well. Is God more likely to intervene when many pray for mercy or justice than when only a few do?
