Le Comte de Buffon, G B S's “Great Buffoon”: Some Experts in Paleontology
Abstract
The pressure on innovative thinkers in this stifling atmosphere of intolerance is well illustrated by Cuvier’s predecessor, Le Comte de Buffon, who initially believed correctly that mastodon remains found in the 18th century on the banks of the Ohio river were a new species of animal, but later was shamed into retracting and admitting that they were after all only a mixture of elephant tusks and hippopotamus teeth. Only those who suffer for others’ sake go to heaven.

Before you go, think about this…
Professor Steven Rose in The Guardian expresses our sympathy for baby Charlotte Wyatt—blind, deaf, scarcely able to respond to the world around her, brain-damaged and in constant pain, but kept alive artificially. For her Christian parents, her life was worth preserving at any cost, even though no miracle could make Charlotte a child able to live without artificial aid. For her doctors, resuscitation could only worsen the child’s pain and misery. A judge was asked to be arbiter, and decided Charlotte should be allowed to die. Could anyone human have done otherwise?

Scepticism does not sell newspapers. Writers who have defected from the tabloids describe “creative” sessions in which writers and editors dream up stories and headlines, the more outrageous the better.
