The program here is called splinters1.php (click to download as a zip file), and it produces this:

E-Books

These compiled files can be freely copied and distributed but remain the copyright of their authors and AskWhy! Publications. The copyright only restricts alteration of the texts and unattributed use of them, not distribution. Anyone can download and distribute these free books from their own website.

Some need to be unzipped using a utility such as WinZip (freely available to try from the web or in many magazine cover disks). The EXE file extracted from the ZIP file is simply compiled HTML. Clicking the file name or double clicking it, according to your setup, automatically loads your web browser and lets you read it. The pdf files need the Adobe Acrobat reader, also freely available. Clicking on a pdf file automatically loads Adobe Acrobat, if you have it, and reads the file.

Free Software Programs

The following simple programs are free and can be freely distributed. They are not copyrighted!

Christian Inclination Test

Download a simple 60 item quiz (9KB) to test your Christian inclinations. Grades you on five qualities: acceptance, compassion, confidence, conservatism and intolerance, giving you a percentage for each and relates them to the needs of Christianity. See it.

Cluster Analysis Software Program

This program is a simple GUI DOS Download cluster analysis program (61KB) which unzips to Awclust.exe. If a group of objects—students, say—can be classified according to certain information then they can be compared by cluster analysis. Decide upon the criteria and how your friends score, then see who is classified as similar to who else by cluster analysis. Or use it seriously. It works fine for small numbers of objects and small numbers of properties. Draws a dendrogram at the end. Try it! It is interesting.

FIBA Sermonizer

Download the FIBA sermoniser (21KB), an absolutely essential tool for anyone preparing sermons or speeches in a sermonic style, looking for a biblical sounding phrase or simply seeking a few stimulating ideas. From the Frederic Ignatious Baines Archive. See it.

AskWhy! Publications Lottery Selector

Download the lottery selector, a tiny Java applet (3KB) for you to put on your own page. You never know, someone might use it, win and give you a donation. Hope springs eternal! No fancy futile analysis here. It just picks you six numbers at random in the UK Lottery range.

You must be Java enabled

You don’t have to send us a donation if you win—of course… but, it would be nice! Keep the AWLottery class file (3KB) in the same folder as the html file that uses it (this one in this case), for it to work.

AskWhy! Publications Convert All

Download the AskWhy! Publications multiple converter, a small Java applet (6KB) for you to convert various troublesome units, or add it to you page to help visitors.

You must be Java enabled

Keep the class file (6KB) in the same folder as the html file that uses it (this one in this case), for it to work.

AskWhy! Publications RGB Color Selector

Download the AskWhy! Publications RGB Color Selector. A common example of simple Java programming, but useful for all that.

You must be Java enabled

Keep the AWColorSelector class file (4KB) in the same folder as the html file that uses it (this one in this case), for it to work.

Free Windows Software Programs

Here are some Windows programs to downoad. The were written in Delphi 1 and, having been recompiled, seem still to be running OK on a more modern computer running Windows ME. Some of them need VBX and VBX DLLs as controls, and these are included in case you do not have them. None of them make any changes to your system. Just unzip them and they should run by clicking the .EXE file from where they are. These files work on my computers! If the system complains a DLL is missing, it might be in one of the other packages. If a VBX will not load, a VBX control DLL might be missing or might need updating. Check out MS or Borland. If you have done all this and still get a complaint from your operating system, give me an e-mail with the complaint.

Acid-Base Titration Software Simulation

Download Awtitre.zip (199KB)—unzips to a simulation of an acid-base titration using your choice of three indicators or a pH meter. Onscreen words are truncated in 95, but the help file should make the procedure clear, if you do not know about titrations. Don’t forget to subtract your initial reading from your final one.

Gas Law Software Simulation

Download Awgaslaw.zip (154KB)—unzips to another simulation, this time of the gas laws. You fill a manometer with the gas then record its volume pressure relationship. Deviations can also be studied. Again there is some word truncation but the help file should be clear enough.

Planetary or Solar System Software Simulation

Download Awmoons.zip (95KB)—unzips to a simulation of a planetary or solar system. Shows the tracks of the moons, and their behaviour under mutual gravitation.

Snail Race Gambling Software Simulation

Download Awsnailr.zip (110KB) unzips to Snailrce.exe, a simple kids gambling game which demonstrates that the bookie usually wins.

UK Lottery Picker

Download Awlottry.zip (99KB) unzips to Awlottry.exe which simply picks your six lottery numbers for you.

Snap Card Game Software Simulation

Download Awsnap.zip (204KB) unzips to a version of the children’s card game Snap, measuring the child’s reaction time.

Moon Lander Software Simulation

Download AWLander.zip (205KB) unzips to a version of the old tribulation Moon Lander. You have to adjust the thrust rate while the rocket decelerates to the surface of the moon. Be prepared to lose a lot of crews before you succeed.

Twixt Card Game Software Simulation

Download Awtwixt.zip (206KB) unzips to another gambling game with cards. The player has to bet the next card turned will be ’twixt the two cards displayed in value. Although you can choose not to bet, it is hard to beat the bank.

African Game Mancala (Awari) Software Simulation

Download Awmancal.zip (106KB) unzips to a version of the African game Mancala (Awari), offering a choice of stones to be distributed.

Free Miscellaneous Software Programs

Are you interested in Conway’s Life and similar automatons? Here are a few that you can download, unzip and run on your own system. They are accompanied by a COM file (Askwhy.com (18KB)). It is a booklet explaining the Life simulations. Click on it for it to open. Askwhy.com has to be in the same directory as the simulations for them to run! They are DOS programs and will open their own DOS window when you click them. If you get a message saying a program will not run in a window, just run it full screen by pressing [alt-enter]. Mainly, they show a set of options, run, show a message, pause then end and you simply click them again to run them again.

Stephen Wolfram, the mathematical genius, in A New Kind of Science? thinks the universe is essentially a cellular automaton. Cellular automatons are programs that feed back on themselves for each equential update according to some simple rules, and thus generate a changing picture. The best known version of a CA was the Game of Life, invented by J H Conway in the sixties. Here are some small programs of Life simulations that run in full screen for you to see what Wolfram is talking about, They are written in C++ and updates the screen in audible tics thus allowing you to see the changes more easily than in FizzLife (below). Keep the Askwhy!.com program in the same folder for them to work.

One dimensional Life
1dLife Rule 30
1dLife Rule 30

Download One dimensional Life (36KB) unzips to Aw1dlife.exe which with a click or double click depicts the motion of the automatons in one dimension (along a line) according to the 256 differents rules which can be set for the creatures. Wolfram was amazed by rule 30 and considers rule 110 to be a universal computer. The successive generations are depicted down the screen for the first few generations. Just tap <space> to move to the next rule in the sequence and automatically run the automaton each time. “Esc” stops them.

MultiLife
The armies clash in Multilife
The armies clash in Multilife

Download MultiLife (36KB) unzips to Awmulife.exe which gives a choice of Conway’s rules and some others and options to run them alternately plus a dual life option in which there are yellow and blue creatures living in the same space, and the choice of a random universe or your own pattern.

Life Game

Download Life Game (43KB)unzips to Awlifegm.exe which is a difficult game based on the life rules. Each player places one to four discs (agreed in advance) on the board, and the game is run according to the life rules. You have to compete in the evolutionary game of life better than your opponent.

Life with Color

Download Life with color (36KB) unzips to Awlifewc.exe which runs a choice of Life simulations with cells colour coded according to age. You can arrange for cells of different ages to die making the simulation end sooner, but by changing the rules to easier ones before all the cells die you can revive them. Patterns produced can be pretty, especially with the simple rules.

A very fast simulation of Conway’s life is Fizz Life which unzips to Fastlife.com. You should run in a full DOS window to see it working properly. In a small window, the computer runs faster than the screen updates, so all the generations are not depicted. Fullscreen they all show but so fast the two dimensional creatures seem alive! This program is machine code which is why it is so fast and tiny (4KB).

Virtual Ants

Download Virtual Ants (36KB) unzips to Awvants.exe which allows you to set up a colony of virtual ants of varying numbers. The interesting thing about virtual ants is that, though they begin in a random space, they get caught in repetitive behaviour—a bit like human beings really!

Solar System

Download Solar System (46KB) unzips to Solarsys.exe which runs a simulation of a solar or planetary system. Different numbers of planets (or moons), scales, tilts and so on can be arranged. The individual moons do not have their own angular momentum and so what would be collisions (where the orbital angular momentum is transferred to the rotational angular momentum of the combined moon) actually illustrate a slingshot effect, hurling the errant moon out of orbit.

Foxes and Rabbits

Finally, here are some more tiny machine code programs. Download Foxes and Rabbits (7KB) unzips to Foxanrab.com which simply draws a graph of the populations of foxes and rabbits in a natural situation. You can change the parameters to see different phenomena in this predator-prey simulation.

The Politically Incorrect Game

Download The Politically Incorrect Game (6KB) is a silly little game played by undergraduates on hand held computers in bars. Drunken Henry has been reported for sexual harassment and has to be pointed to the door of the Dean or Vice-Chancellor across the campus. On the campus lawn are some feminists and some of his friends. He lurches to avoid the feminists and lurches towards his friends.

Before you go, think about this…

Some of the witticisms of John Wilkes, the English liberal and supporter of US independence, have become everyday expressions. At a party, he was offered a pinch of snuff, but refused, saying, “I have no minor vices”. Thousands of US children were later named after him.
