An American Nazi of the 1930s was economist Lawrence Dennis, who wrote The Coming American Fascism (1936), a coming which he welcomed. Dennis bemoaned that the resistance to fascism was “liberal norms of law or constitutional guarantees of private rights”, so tried to tried to denigrate traditional liberal Americans as “the laughing stock of their own countrymen”. Maybe his prophesy was of the George W Bush era.

American police procedure concentrates on evidence and not anecdotes. As the European witch trials remind us, suspects can be intimidated during interrogation, people confess to crimes they never committed, eyewitnesses can be mistaken, but real, unfabricated evidence — powder burns, fingerprints, semen, skin and blood samples for DNA, footprints, hair — carry great weight. Criminalists use the scientific method. Carl Sagan asks where is the evidence — the real, unambiguous physical evidence, the data that would convince a jury that hasn’t already made up its mind — for God or any other supernatural being or alien abductions?
