A website organized by “R Joe” ran a petition called “A Scientific Support For Darwinism” for four days from 28 September to 1 October, 2005, inviting scientists to support Darwinism against intelligent design (ID). The creationist front, the Discovery Institute, had issued a much quoted press release, listing a mere 400 scientists who favoured “A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism”. It took four years to compile.
The four day petition launched with no well funded organization behind it from a simple website gathered 7,733 verified names of concerned scientists in the four days it officially ran. Over 4000 had a doctorate.
In the week after the petition had closed another 3000 names were submitted, and there seems little reason to doubt that any website left running would collect tens of thousands of names of proper scientists who can see no merit in the flak the Christians are throwing at the theory of evolution.
The creationist propaganda machine at the Discovery Institute with its multi-million dollar annual budget gets all the publicity for its insane beliefs, polls and petitions, while the silent majority of trained scientists not willing to compromise science for foolish and ill-considered religious motives are ignored by the media.
Publicity issued by the creationists that the public want the evidence for intelligent design taught, deliberately ignores that you cannot teach what does not exist.
• There is more evidence for Black Magic than for Intelligent Design.
Thousands of papers are issued supporting evolution every year and none has ever been published in any peer reviewed scientific journal supporting ID. If there were one, should it be taught despite the vast array of evidence against it?
